The eighth annual YouthFriends Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 18 at the WinterStone Golf Course in Independence. Registration and breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

“We are excited about the opportunity to build awareness of YouthFriends and the camaraderie in our community,” said Allison Kisner, volunteer services coordinator for the Independence School District. “The YouthFriends Golf Tournament is a great way to accomplish both of these initiatives.”

YouthFriends, which is in more than 70 schools throughout Missouri and Kansas, works to connect students with members of the community. Volunteers work with students in kindergarten through 12th grades doing a variety of activities such as reading, homework or even having lunch once a week.

“Studies show the presence of a positive adult role model in a young person’s life builds confidence and encourages students to set and achieve goals,” Kisner said. “YouthFriends volunteering is a great way for people to give back to the community. One hour a week is all it takes to mentor or tutor a student. It’s a small way to change a child’s life. It’s fun, it’s flexible, and it makes a world of difference.”

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available for the tournament. A team of four is $500, a prize sponsor starts at $75, and a hole sponsor is $150. A concession cart sponsor is $300, a golf cart sponsor is $500 and a breakfast sponsor is $500. The two largest sponsorship opportunities are lunch sponsor, which is $1,200, and title sponsor, which is $3,000.

The sponsorship and entry deadline is May 6.

All money raised through the tournament will go to support the program for the 2011-12 school year. Kisner said organizers would like to raise more than $10,000.

“These activities give YouthFriends and their mentors an opportunity to connect outside of the school,” she said. “YouthFriends connects students, teachers and schools with inspiring mentors and real-world learning experiences to promote success, encourage healthy behaviors and build stronger community.”
