For the first time in 20 years, St. Mary’s is a district golf champion.

The Trojans totaled 392 at the par-72 Drumm Farm Golf Club Thursday to prevail by 22 strokes.

Sophomore Kyle Osborn paced the Trojans with a 90 to place second in the medalist’s race. Lane Osborn was third with 94 and Alex Edwards fifth with 97. Concordia’s Josh Bushman was the medalist with 87.

“The boys were happy with doing something that hasn’t been done in 20 years at St. Mary’s,” coach David Edwards said.

“However, to my pleasant surprise none of them were happy with the way they played. Even though it was windy, it was actually warm. They have rarely practiced or played in warm weather this season, so maybe the warm conditions weren’t helpful.

“As far as I’m concerned, I am very proud of each of them regardless of their respective scores. To accomplish something that hasn’t been done in a long time is pretty special.

“That being said, they will likely need to play better at sectionals next week in order to meet their goal of qualifying as a team for the state tournament.”

The Class 1, Sectional  4 will be at Shirkey Golf Club in Richmond next Wednesday.
