To the editor:

Your yes vote is needed for your safety!

On April 3, my family and I will be voting “yes” for the police and safety tax. Unfortunately, we have had to make many 911 calls to the Independence Police Department in very recent times and we have had to wait and wait for help to come.

Returned calls were made to 911 requesting the whereabouts of an officer, only to be told they would be there soon, as they were all on other calls. This is a blackout – every available officer is on another call. This should never be the case, as we have actually waited for help in very serious matters, such as watching a stranger try to commit suicide, and also many break-ins to neighboring church sheds, where expensive lawn equipment and John Deere mowers repeatedly have been stolen. We have watched actual crimes being committed, and with frustration see the crooks get away before officers could arrive.

We must be the eyes and ears for the police, but we need to be reassured that help will be there in just minutes. These brave officers are putting their life on the line for us each and every day. They need more help! Next time it may be you and your family needing assistance, and you will have wished you had voted for the much needed safety tax!

Approximately 43 percent of the arrests of our cities crimes were people from Kansas City. Every day more and more crimes are committed. We cannot afford to let this continue. The approximate cost to you is around $5 per month, a very small price to pay to help keep you safe. For the sake of your family members, children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors in Independence, please vote yes on April 3.
