Current and former William Chrisman High School students are getting together this weekend to raise money for the homeless.

Bears Helping Bears is a program that sponsors fundraisers throughout the year to benefit students in the Independence School District who are homeless. There are three fundraisers scheduled Saturday that will begin the task of raising funds for this purpose.

The day starts off with a biscuit and gravy breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 120 S. Pleasant in Independence. A $7 donation is being requested for the meal. In addition, community members are being asked to bring donations of clothing, non-perishable food or tertiary items. The event is being sponsored by the Independence School District Alumni Association, specifically the William Chrisman and Truman classes of 1965 and the William Chrisman Class of 1967.

The next event is a free retirement seminar, which is from 1 to 3 p.m., also at the Masonic Lodge. Topics that will be covered include Medicare, what is expected after 65, final expenses, life insurance, long-term care and how to leave a legacy of love rather than resentment, among others. The presenters will be Jan Nelson and Tim Stricklin. Once again, donations of clothing, food or toiletry items are being accepted. There will be a snack bar available during the seminar. All proceeds will go to help homeless students in the district.

The final fundraiser is the Bobby Simkins Elvis Tribute Show at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge. Simkins is a well-known Kansas City performer and has been an opening act at Santa-Cali-Gon Days as well as being named the 1985 KC Opry Singer of the Year. A Van Horn graduate, he will be performing an all-ages show. Tickets are $11 and can be purchased at the door or online at www.24to40.com/tickets.htm. Donations of clothing, food and toiletries will be accepted. A snack bar will also be open for this event.
