As a recently retired city employee, it would be easy to just go away and keep my mouth shut but those who know me know that is not my nature.

I spent many years working in the Independence Police Department Detective Bureau as the city’s fire investigator, and know many of the IPD officers (including most of the command staff). I also spent many years working with the Fire Department administration and am very aware of how the city works.

Do the hard working men and women of both IPD and IFD need additional resources and new funding sources? Without a doubt they do! Does the current city administration need additional funding to spend in its continued inappropriate and irresponsible manner? Absolutely not!

I know former Police Chief Fred Mills and know he is a true professional and fine man. However, he has many times referred to the March 2007 Berkshire report in relating the need for additional officers. I wonder why he fails to mention the June 2008 report prepared by Tracy Elmore, the former management analyst, where many problems were found with the administration of the IPD Communications Division. Could it be because the Elmore report was critical of the emergency communications director?

Until the administrative issues can be resolved, pouring more funds into a broken system will accomplish nothing except create additional hardship on the taxpayers. Let’s demand that the elected officials do their jobs, get the staff issues corrected, and then, and only then, provide the additional funding that is so badly needed.

I fully expect the city’s administration to attempt to label me as a disgruntled/disgraced former employee, however, I will point out that I am duty disability retired by the Missouri LAGERS retirement system and am still licensed by the state of Missouri as a paramedic.
