Blue Springs Post 499/Fike was too much for the Blue Springs Rod’s Sports Athletics in Zone 2 East American Legion baseball opening doubleheader.
Outstanding pitching and defense led the way as Fike prevailed 7-0 and 7-1 Tuesday night at Hidden Valley Park.
“The A’s have a very young ball club and as they go through the season they will become better,” Fike manager Jim Moran said. “We felt very good about the performance of our ballclub, especially our defense. And give credit to our starting pitchers for setting the tone for the game.”
Winning pitcher Danny McMurtrey and Josh Smetana combined for a one-hitter and 11 strikeouts in the opening game. Brian Burasco’s sixth-inning double was the only A’s hit.
McMurtrey struck out six in four innings for the victory. The loss went to Tyler Reed.
Fike (2-0) pounded out 11 hits, including a two-run homer by Gehrig Hudson and a solo blast by Smetana. Justin Ginter added three hits and Josh Hightower had two, including a double.
Jordan Oddo allowed only four hits in the second-game win. Spencer Schwandt took the loss for the A’s (0-2).
Hudson doubled twice, Shay Parra singled twice and Stephen Montisano and Ginter each doubled to power Post 499.
Alex Duvall and Kyle Roberts each doubled for the A’s, and Roberts doubled in the only A’s run of the night.
Fike had only one error in each game.
