As I spoke the words of the oath of office to represent the citizens of District 1, I was reminded of the responsibilities and expectations I was swearing to uphold. Responsibilities not only to the citizens of Blue Springs, but also to support the constitutions of the United States and the state of Missouri, and the provisions and ordinances of the city of Blue Springs.

“I, Jeffrey Quibell, do solemnly swear and affirm…”

As I spoke the words of the oath of office to represent the citizens of District 1, I was reminded of the responsibilities and expectations I was swearing to uphold. Responsibilities not only to the citizens of Blue Springs, but also to support the constitutions of the United States and the state of Missouri, and the provisions and ordinances of the city of Blue Springs.

So, what are the responsibilities of a city councilman? First, to be knowledgeable and open-minded regarding the issues and concerns that will be discussed and voted upon publicly, and to have a willingness to ask questions respectfully and listen to the answers before making any conclusions. The professional staff of the city provides detailed information to each councilman, assisting us in performing our duties and answering questions as we prepare for the meetings.

Second, a councilman is your representative, your voice when issues arise within your community requiring additional guidance or assistance to resolve. In the time I have served as a city councilman, I received many requests from residents regarding concerns with neighbors, adjoining property disputes, traffic issues and compliance with property maintenance codes. Working together with our city staff and the residents allows us to find resolutions to the problems that will facilitate an equitable solution for all.

The duties and responsibilities of your city councilmen are many and varied, but our primary responsibility is to represent you, the citizens of our district and the city of Blue Springs. It is an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity, and I am humbled by the opportunity.

Representing District 1 provides me great satisfaction and enjoyment, particularly the opportunity to help people find solutions to the issues that concern them.
