Byron Alvarez scored four goals as the Comets scored the final nine points for a 17-9 Major Indoor Soccer League win over the Syracuse Silver Knights in front of 4,500 fans Saturday at the Independence Events Center.

The Comets (6-7), who had played six of their last seven games on the road and lost four in a row, grabbed a 6-0 lead after one quarter. Forward Mads Falck scored the first two goals before Alvarez scored on John Sosa’s second assist of the period.

Former Comet Jamar Beasley scored two of Syracuse’s four goals as the Silver Knights outscored the Comets 9-2 over the next two periods to grab a 9-8 lead.

But Alvarez scored at the 1:22 mark of the fourth quarter to put the Comets ahead for good. Ryan Junge added a shorthanded goal six minutes later.

Cristiano scored an unassisted empty-net 3-point goal at the 12:39 mark and Alvarez capped his four-goal night just four seconds later.

“We played near perfect soccer in the first quarter, and then came out flat in the second,” Comets coach Kim Roentved said. “I challenged them to finish the way they started and they responded, especially in the fourth quarter.”

The Comets return to action 3:10 p.m. Sunday against the rival Wichita Wings at the Independence Events Center.
