Valeta Skip Baxter, 67, of Blue Springs, Mo., passed away October 28, 2009, surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Valeta was born on January 30, 1942, in Archie, Mo., the daughter of Dudley Noell and Betty Noell (Butler). Valeta attended Harrisonville schools, moving to Kansas City attending Paseo High School and then to Blue Springs High School where she graduated in the class of 1959. (The 1959 school yearbook has a quote beneath her picture saying that she lived up to her nickname, “Skip”). On her 18th birthday in 1960, she married Fred Baxter and to this union, five children were born.

Skip worked during high school at Lowe’s Drugstore, later working at Western Electric, Lake City Arsenal, a bus driver for the Blue Springs School district (and received the bus driver of the year award). While she drove the school bus, she began beauty school at the Golden Crown Beauty College and upon graduation she began a new career in the beauty business. Skip though not stopping there, she also worked hard and trained to receive her Funeral Directors license. Skip has for the last 24 years been self-employed at Hair Designer’s in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Skip never met a stranger, she always had a smile for everyone she encountered and was always concerned for their well being. If they were down on their luck or if they just needed a friendly environment, there was always a space at her home. She kept all of us  around her laughing. Skip was a source of strength and an inspiration to all of the people who knew and loved her. She has left a huge imprint on all of our lives and on our hearts.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Melissa Baxter. Survivors include three daughters, Tammy Allensworth (Brian), Shanda Baxter, Jana Watterson (Matt), one son, John Baxter (Cheryl), two sisters, Judy Fligg (Bill), Gloria Allen (Doug), one brother, Gene Noell (Sheila), seven grandchildren, Jason Specker, Conner Allensworth, Caleb Baxter, Dylan and Raegan Watterson, Brooke and Adrian Schubert, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11a.m., Friday, October 30, 2009, at Meyers Funeral Chapel with Reverend Eric Means officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow at Blue Springs Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or Kansas City Hospice.

Arrangements entrusted to Meyers Funeral Chapel 1600 W Main Blue Springs, MO 64015, 816-229-3276. Condolences and memories of Skip may be shared with the family online at www.meyersfuneralchapel.com.
