The Kansas City area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until midnight.

The watch area extends from the western edge of Missouri to central Kansas, and some storms have developed in the watch area. An area 22 miles south of Emporia, Kan., and another area 11 miles north of Emporia are under tornado warnings until 8:45 p.m. Several funnel clouds have been spotted, the Weather Service says.

A watch means conditions are favorable for the formation of severe storms. A warning, on the other hand, means spotters on the ground have seen or radar has detected severe weather such as a heavy thunderstorm or a tornado. During a watch, authorities advice keeping an eye on on the TV, an ear on the radio or even the NOAA weather radio on.

Jackson, Platte, Clay, Cass and Bates counties in Missouri and 29 counties in Kansas are under the watch.
