Independence Post 21 manager Tom Bush said things probably could have been better Thursday night. But he admitted they also could have been worse.

Post 21 edged the Blue Springs Rod’s Sports A’s 3-1 in the first round of the Zone 2 Tournament in Sedalia. Post 21 survived despite the fact that the squad stranded about a dozen runners on base, Bush said.

“We had chances to blow this game wide open,” he said.

But surviving and advancing is the name of the game in the postseason, Bush added, and his squad found a way to win as Tommy Harris worked six innings and Bobby Brock earned the save by tossing three scoreless frames in relief.

“Tommy didn’t have his best stuff,” Bush said. “But he competed. And Bobby Brock was fantastic.”

Post 21 (37-16) tallied a pair of runs in the first and another in the fourth. Ross Paschall went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Tyler Bodenstab cracked two doubles and Andrew Billingsley stroked a double and drove in two.

Matt Morrison went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the A’s (41-15).

Post 21 meets top-seeded Blue Springs Post 499/Fike (47-12) at 10 a.m. today.
