Harris Stanley “Tommy” Tompkins, 96, of Belton, Mo., passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Noland Road Chapel, 509 S. Noland Road, Independence. Burial will follow in Mount Washington Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Tommy was born October 4, 1916, in Wheeling, Mo., to Frank and Ethel (Harris) Tompkins and was the oldest surviving graduate of Wheeling High School. He served his country proudly during World War II and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was preceded into heaven by his wife of 58 years, Betty Jane on July 11, 2005.

He is survived by two children, Gary Tompkins (Adele) of Independence, Mo., and Dana Dillon, also of Independence; five granddaughters, Stephanie Reiss (Bobby), Lisa Haley (John), Natalie Dillon, Stacie Smith (Brian) and Lori Smith (Jason); eight great-grandchildren, Kylie, Dillon, J.T., Tanner, Luke, Jaylee, Emilee, Ethan and one on the way; and one sister, Mildred Kaye of Miller, Mo.
