George Oviatt Shiffer, 86, Independence, Mo., passed away Friday, May 24, 2013.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence. A celebration of George’s life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project.

George was born April 2, 1927, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Wm. P. Jr. and Evelyn (Farmer) Shiffer. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. George worked for Kansas City Power & Light, for over 40 years, retiring in 1992 and was a member of the IBEW Local Union 124. George enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially traveling with his wife. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Margaret Shiffer in 2013; son, William J. Shiffer in 1998; son-in-law, Stephen Mueller in 2009; and sister, Marilyn Storms.

Survivors include his daughter, Georgia Mueller; grandchildren, Lauren Ackerman and husband, Paul, Kathryn Gaherty and husband, Michael, William M. Shiffer and wife, Lois, and Geo. Clinton Shiffer; great-granddaughter, Georgia M. Ackerman.
