The last two winter seasons have been hard on Eastern Jackson County school districts, which is why Grain Valley is going to be a little more prepared next year.

The Grain Valley Board of Education approved the 2011-12 calendar at a meeting earlier this month.

The first day of school is Aug. 17. Thanksgiving break is Nov. 23 to 25 and winter break is Dec. 22 to Jan. 3. Spring break is March 9 to 12 and Easter break is April 6 to 9. The last day of school is May 15, 2012.

Superintendent Roy Moss said a committee of representatives from each building, maintenance, food service and transportation meet to discuss the options. The staff then vote on several options, with the winning calendar presented to the board.

May 16 to 25 have been set aside as make-up snow days. No days were specifically built into they calendar this year. In addition to a week of make-up days prior to Memorial Day, students also came back on Presidents Day and will have to make up a day in April in order to not interfere with the state of the 2011 summer school session.

“We didn’t build in snow days this year, but we did next year,” he said. “The extra days were added on to the end of the year. This wouldn’t be an issue unless we miss over six or seven days, then it becomes an issue and affects the beginning of summer school. Other than that, there are no major changes to the calendar this year.”
