Add another hotel to the bustling commercial area of southeast Independence.

Construction began this week on a Drury Inn & Suites at the southeast corner of Interstate 70 and Little Blue Parkway, across from the Blue Ridge Bank & Trust and near Corner Cafe. It’s part of the planned development called Trinity Woods.

The 180-room hotel will take more than a year to build.

“We’re thinking summer of ’11” for an opening, said Alison Casler, the company’s director of training and communications. The hotel is expected to employ about 35 people.

The hotel will have a different look than the company’s other hotels in the Kansas City area. The other Drury Inns are on Blue Ridge Cut-off across from Kauffman Stadium, near Kansas City International Airport, in Merriam and in Overland Park. The company also has a Pear Tree Inn in Overland Park.

The company works hard, Casler said, to find highly visible, easily accessible locations like the one at I-70 and Little Blue Parkway.

“It’s a great corner,” she said.

Drury Inn joins more than half a dozen hotels in the retail and entertainment area around I-70 and I-470.
Casler said business is going well. Traffic from business people traveling during the week is soft but weekend leisure stays are strong, she said.
