Sgt. Lee Grinter, of Company F, Third Regiment, of Independence, made the highest score in a shoot held by the regiment at the Swope Park rifle range. He made a score of 131 out of a possible 150. The National Rifle Association offered a gold medal to the best shot in each regiment all over the country. The Independence team was composed of Capt. E.M. Stayton, Lt. John H. Miles, and Sgts. Wm. Jones, R.H. Smith, Scott Tidswell and Grinter.
