The Missouri Department of Transportation will break ground on the Interstate 435 and Front Street diverging diamond interchange Monday.

This will mark the official start of a busy construction season, MoDOT says.

The diverging diamond ground-breaking begins at 10 a.m., Monday on the south side of Front Street, just west of I-435.

The interchange will be the first of its kind in the metro. The first such  interchange was built in Springfield at the Missouri 13 and Interstate 44 interchange. A second one has been added in Springfield, and one has opened in St. Louis.

One also is planned for the Interstate 70 and Woods Chapel Road interchange in Blue Springs.

The design is unusual in the way it directs traffic. You can watch a MoDOT video showing traffic moving through at diverging diamond here.
